So, I also make cakes…but only for special occasions for children I particularly love…this one was for my best friend’s boys (she has four of them…all wonderful little boys).

Chloe (my oldest & super-artistic daughter) made the zebra, snake and tree for this cake…let me start by stating that she doesn’t have any patience whatsoever and expects things to instantly transform into the vision in her head…it was basically like the turtle & the hare that day…she totally rushed through and was out of there…whereas I took almost 3 days to finish my pieces…if only we could be combined into one super-human.

Everyone at the party made irrational statements such as:  “oh, I’d pay you $50 to make us a cake like that for ______________ (insert a various, quickly-impending holiday/event)…I just scowled at them and informed them that it cost more than that to make and each animal took me 2 hours to make and it will never ever happen again!  The animals are made out of rice crispy treats and then covered in various shades of fondant that myself and my youngest daughter (Emerson, my mini-chef) made.  We had the hardest time making brown fondant until we figured out that adding a combination of cocoa powder and melted dark chocolate made a way better color than just using food coloring.  The black fondant was from Duff’s line of baking stuff (Ace of Cakes guy)…I am by far normally too cheap to buy fondant but the thought of making black sent shivers deep into my soul.  His fondant is beautifully colored and has a great texture to work with but had a greasy residue.

Just to scare you more, there was over 16 POUNDS of powdered sugar and an industrial-sized bag of mini-marshmallows between the frosting and the homemade fondant on this cake.  By the way, if you are adventurous enough to make your own homemade fondant you should really try marshmallow fondant, it is so much easier to knead together (I used my Kitchen-Aid and wrapped a damp towel around it to keep the explosion of powdered sugar to a minimum).  I don’t have the recipe handy, but I always just search for Marshmallow Fondant Recipe online to find it each cake I make anyway.

I ended up not even eating a single slice of the cake…I think I spent so much time making it that I couldn’t stand the thought of spending another minute with it.

This was probably my favorite one I ever made…he was just so sweet looking.  I made his arms and ears black by lightly wetting some Nori (dried seaweed used for Sushi) and wrapping little shapes I formed out of rice. The star he is holding was cut out of a cucumber with a tiny cookie cutter.
He is surrounded by broccoli and grape tomatoes.  I don’t even remember what was in the other box…I didn’t care because I was just so in love with the Panda.

These are my Little Devils for my Little Devils…lol.  I dyed some hard-boiled eggs, just with food coloring, nestled them into a bed a rice which I framed with homemade salsa.  The top box even though you can’t see it was just filled with Tortilla Chips.

These were little piggies, I think I dyed them with ketchup…their face is cut out of lunch meat backed with Nori (dried seaweed) pieces.  One little trick I learned is to attach pieces with tiny broken pieces of dry spaghetti that soften by the time that they eat their lunch.
This one was fairly simple including baby eggrolls, frozen grapes and more cheese.

This was another alien…just a hard-boiled egg nestled in some blue-colored rice.  In the top of the rice is a planet made out of a tiny hard-boiled quail egg wrapped with a pepper slice.  The other little flower is a refillable sauce bottle.  The stars are just cut out of yellow cheese slices.

I remember I was soooo excited to get another order of Bento stuff in from Japan…I especially loved these sandwich boxes.  The boxes were really cheap (like $3), but then I had to wait what felt like forever for them to get here.
This particular lunch was WAY too easy…a funny bagel sandwich, skewers of tomatoes, rainbow goldfish crackers and mini pickles…oh and the girls loved those little Asian Milk Candies that I found at Cost Plus, but sadly never saw there again.

Another one that didn’t end up looking very good, but it came from a happy place…it was inspired by Mushroom-Hunting with Grandma.  The little mushroom was made out of cheese and lunchmeat, he was hiding on a bed of raviolis.
In the other box they had plums, cheese and mini-pickles.

This was per Chloe’s request for pizza.  I made a space ship out of a mini-bagel that I melted a slice of provolone over the top of and added mini-pepperoni slice windows.  The alien is a tie-dyed hard-boiled egg.
I don’t know if you can see them clearly, but I thought I was so creative because I made him little planets out of a grape tomatoes stuck through a round slice of a baby cucumber.  The little blue star in the top box is a silicone baking cup that is filled with edamame and in front of that are “Happy Panda” cookies (probably got those at Cost Plus World Market.
